Juror's Statement

"Jurying Art Maui. So, who is going to love me and whose dreams are going to crumble? That is a reality of being a juror-and more important, the reality of being juried. So often the line between in or out is a very fine line, more an outcome of "maybe" or "maybe not" rather than a direct rejection. However I do have a few strong points of view. It is because I respect the standard and diversity of art on Maui that I shall not select work simply to make a harmonious, balanced, nice exhibition. As I see it, my function is to select the best of what is submitted, whatever its nature.

I have equal respect for artwork where concept is paramount or where the focus is essentially on formal values; when craftsmanship is of the highest order, or when the work is of a mature ability and skill. I so, too, have a special admiration for work that is refreshingly adventurous with special promise rather than total success.

If I have a bias it is towards artwork that sustains after a first look, rather than for work that may initially be dramatic and striking, but essentially shallow.
